Finding a proper pair of jeans that fits both the hip and leg length perfectly can be difficult. However, taking many pairs of jeans to a professional tailor can add up. Fusing web, found in fabric stores and even retailers like Target that have a sewing section, allows for jeans to be hemmed by simply using an iron to attach the fusing web to a hem. The fusing web is like a tape made of fibers, and once it is heated it attaches itself with the hem and forms a bond. This allows for a quick and easy tailoring job within minutes.

Things You'll Need:

  • Fusing Web Iron
  1. Step 1

Decide what length the jeans need to be, and form a temporary hem by folding under the jean bottom until the desired length is reached. Try the jeans on with the type of shoes that will be generally worn during wear, so that the jeans can be hemmed with the ideal length.

  2. Step 2

Cut enough of the fusing web so that it fits around the cuff of the jeans waiting to be hemmed. Place the fusing web in between the two fabric layers of the jeans and cover with a small hand towel to prevent burning of the jeans from the iron. If you are using a dry iron, slightly wet the towel for the fusing web to be steamed.

  3. Step 3

Set the iron to "Wool" and press down on the new hems for at least 10 seconds before removing. Use a pressing down motion instead of a back and forth motion because that can prevent the fusing web from fully sticking. Go around the entire leg of the jeans.

  4. Step 4

Check the results once the jeans have cooled. Test the hem by slightly pulling back on an edge of one of the pant legs, and if it is not fully attached repeat Step 3. If the hem is attached and after many washings it removes itself, repeat the process to reattach the hem.

  5. Step 5

Change existing hems once the web has been used by steaming the area, and loosening the fusing web. Reattach the hems at the desired length, and steam back on for 10 seconds, or until attached.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fusing web can be used on various fabrics, including lace. As long as the fabric allows for itself to be steamed, fusing web is acceptable.
  • Do not use on sheer fabrics.
