    Instructions

Record your favorite shows. Instead of sitting through commercials, recording gives you the option to skip them altogether. In addition, if the show is dreadful in the beginning you can fast-forward to see if it is going to get any better, rather than having to sit and wait through the entire show.

Test yourself to see if the shows are worth it, or if you're just watching out of boredom. For one week, call up the willpower to give up viewing the shows that you regularly watch. You'll know at the end of the week which shows to continue watching and which shows weren't important enough to watch again. Chances are, you'll have at least one or two shows to eliminate from your viewing schedule per week.

Find a new hobby. If there's something you're passionate about doing, there is a chance you would be willing to turn off the television in favor of working on that hobby.

Schedule dates with others for times when you're normally watching television. Whether it's having a family night at home or going to a weekly dinner with friends, you're less likely to be in front of the television if there is somewhere else to be and a commitment you have made to other people. Consider enrolling in an exercise class or another type of course that will be sure to keep you out of the house.

Go out and exercise. The benefits of heath, potential weight loss and being active far outweigh sitting in front of the television. Get into an exercise routine during the time when you would normally be watching TV shows. Exercise can be quite addictive; you may end up getting so involved with it that television could become a distant second when it comes to choosing something to do.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Recruit your loved ones to help you stay away from the television. It could help them break their addiction to TV as well.
