How to Replace Trailer Rims

Trailer rims are probably not the first thing you want to "pimp"; however, if you like to ride in style, even when you are simply taking your snowmobile up to the mountains for a week of trail blazing, pimping your trailer is a must. On the other hand, if you are more the practical type, new trailer rims can improve fuel mileage, prevent costly blowouts and give you a smoother ride. Trailer rims frequently get bent from being driven over curbs, or up and over dock pilings, or off the edges of steep ramps. In that case, you need to replace the trailer rims. So go pimp or go practical; either way, there are things you need to know.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure the front of the trailer on top of two cinderblocks. Slide them under the hitch bar and stabilize them if needed.

    • 2

Place a tire jack under the rear axle of the trailer and raise the jack until it lifts the trailer slightly off the ground. The tire should be just resting on the ground.

    • 3

Loosen the lug nuts on the trailer wheel by turning them once, counterclockwise. Brace the wheel while you loosen the nuts. Loosen each one in succession until they can be turned by hand, then completely remove the nuts by hand.

    • 4

Jack up the trailer until it is a few inches off the ground. Then remove the tire's wheel rim and set it aside. Clean off any old grease or brake dust from around the trailer wheel base.

    • 5

Tire the trailer rim by sliding the new tire onto the rim. Place it on a tire machine and secure the rim onto the trailer. Then inflate to the proper pressure.

    • 6

Slide the new trailer rim and wheel onto the trailer and tighten the bolts with the tire iron. Then lower the trailer back to the ground.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have your tires professionally installed on your trailer rims. This ensures the best fit and saves a lot of time. If you do not have your own tire machine, you will end up spending half the afternoon struggling to get the trailer tire onto the rim.
