How to Throw a Camping Themed Party
You and your pals adore everything about camping--the wide open spaces, the glorious landscape and the wonderful wildlife. Even if the whole gang can't get away for a weekend of camping, you can bring the camping experience to them if you throw a camping themed party. None of the party preparations are elaborate and most are based on things you already own. Heck, throwing a camping themed party might even be easier than packing for a weekend in the woods.

Get out the gear. Decorate your home and yard with things you would normally bring on a camping trip. Set up a tent to store food or beverages. Lay down some sleeping bags, tarps and pillows to sit on. Drape mosquito netting from the doorway. Hang hiking boots, canteens, wilderness maps and backpacks strategically around the place. For an extra festive touch, hook up some wooden signs telling people where to find things like the bathroom. Also get some miniature figurines of bears, bobcats, raccoons and other critters you'd find in the wild to scatter about your house.

Gather the food. Serve up hot dogs, canned beans, fresh fruit, grilled veggies and lots of trail mix. For best results, cook on an open barbecue grill or, better yet, a campfire. Have those plastic fold-down camping cups for drinking glasses and have folks eat off plastic camping gear plates.

Hook up a campfire. A campfire burning in a fire pit in your yard, or even indoors in the fireplace, will definitely add ambiance and allure to your camping themed party. Use the outdoor fire to roast marshmallows, cook hot dogs and sit around to tell spooky stories.

Set the mood. Music should include folk songs, acoustic sing-alongs and a background of nature sounds, definitely inclusive of chirping crickets (see Resources). Light the scene with lanterns, candles and even propped up flashlights.

Include camping games and activities. In addition to sharing spooky stories around the campfire, hook up a few camping games. These could include pin the tail on the angry black bear, a trivia game based on flora and fauna questions and "name that track and scat" where players have to identify an animal by its footprints and droppings. You can hook up all these games yourself by making a bear out of poster board and magic markers and researching nature facts at your library (see Resources).
