Remote control boats appeal to kids of all ages, from 1 to 100. These small boats offer speed and excitement to racers and rest and relaxation to putterers. Learn which RC hulls are best for beginners, pick your power source and buy or build your boat. All that's left is to head outdoors for hours of fun.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research hulls before you buy. Deep V hulls are often recommended for beginners because of their stability and ease of handling. Catamarans are harder to control but go faster, and hydroplanes are more of both: difficult to handle but very speedy.

  2. Step 2

Decide which kind of power source you want. You can use gas or nitro -- beginners often start with the latter because nitro-powered boats tend to be cheaper. Remote control sailboats are quiet and relaxing; electric ones are good for quiet settings, too.

  3. Step 3

Buy a boat at your local hobby store or on an RC boat Website (see Resources below). The selection is better online, but at the store you get to chat and ask all the questions you want.

  4. Step 4

Build your own remote control boat from a kit (see Resources below). If you're handy, you can make sailboats, electric boats and more. You get twice the fun that way -- the creative experience, plus playing with your creation in the water.
