Knitting a Beanie Hat
Beanie hats knit up fairly quickly and are dense enough to keep the chill at bay in wintertime. This pattern is for a solid-colored beanie hat with a snug base and tight knit. The pattern can easily be altered to include contrasting stripes, but this basic cap is a good place to start.

1
Cast 72 stitches onto the double-pointed needles. Loosely tie a small piece of preferably contrasting yarn onto the right-hand needle, behind the final stitch. The piece of yarn will mark the end of the row, making it easier to keep track of how many rows have been completed.
-
2
Work the first 10 rows in a ribbed pattern, knitting two stitches and purling one stitch. Click the row counter after each row is completed to keep track of the pattern.
-
-
3
Switch patterns for Row 11. Knit eight stitches, then increase one stitch. Repeat the pattern all the way across the row. After Row 11 is completed, there should be 81 stitches on the needle.
-
4
Knit 30 rows, keeping track of the pattern with the row counter. After these rows are knitted, the total number of rows should be 41.
-
5
Begin decreasing the stitches on the needles. For the 42nd row, knit seven stitches and then knit two stitches together, repeating the pattern all the way across. Repeat the pattern in the next few rows, decreasing the number of stitches knitted each time. For the 43rd row, knit six stitches and then knit two stitches together. For the 44th row, knit five stitches and then knit two stitches together.
-
6
Transfer the hat to the double-pointed needles and continue decreasing the stitches. For the 45th row, knit four stitches and then knit two stitches together. For the 46th row, knit three stitches and then knit two stitches together.
-
7
Knit two stitches together all the way around the 47th row.
-
8
Knit the 48th row all the way around. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail, and thread the tail through the tapestry needle. Draw the tail counterclockwise through the stitches remaining on the needles. Pull tight.
-
9
Draw the needle through the hole in the center of the top of the hat and weave in the end. Weave in the tail at the base of the cap.
