When you make the decision to bring home a new puppy, there are many things you are going to have to teach it in order for the adoption to work out successfully. Here you will learn not only how to teach your dog its name, but also an easy trick to insure that it comes to you when you call its name.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dog treats
  1. Step 1

Choose a name for your new puppy or dog. It is best to pick something relatively short and easy to remember. Aim for two syllables or less.

  2. Step 2

Say it often. It is common when you first get a new animal to refer to it simply as "puppy." You must try to remember to always use the animal's name in place of these terms as soon as one is decided upon.

  3. Step 3

Reward your dog for responding to its name. Go to your local pet or grocery store and buy a large bag of healthy, small treats. Show the dog a treat. Let him sniff it and then give it to him so that in the future he understands what it is.

  4. Step 4

Call your dog's name while holding a treat. If he comes immediately, give him the treat. If not, reveal the treat and call its name again. When the dog finally obeys and comes to your call, award it with one treat. Use this technique often throughout the day.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try using your dog's name in different tones of voice.
