A cardiovascular technician performs diagnostic exams at the request of the patient's physician. After performing the examination, the technician then works alongside the physician, offering assistance in noninvasive peripheral vascular testing. Cardiovascular technicians who have been trained in cardiac catheterization procedures are called cardiology technologists and assist the attending physician inserting small catheters into the patent's small blood vessels and also other invasive procedures.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Job-shadow a cardiovascular technician to see exactly what your average day will be like when you start your own career. Learn about the job's pros and cons, the daily routine, the type of cases they see and schooling. Stay in contact with this person; he can provide you with a reference and alert you to possible job openings when you are ready to launch your own career.

  2. Step 2

Get accepted into a cardiovascular program. The typical student takes approximately 2 years to get through schooling and emerges from the program with an associate degree. Students who are attracted to a higher salary and more responsibilities can pursue a bachelor's degree and will be qualified to assist with invasive procedures. Canadian medical facilities often give preference to students who have graduated from a Canadian school. Two health care colleges are Everest College and CDI College. The school you choose to attend must be accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Cardiovascular Technology.

  3. Step 3

Take as many courses in cardiovascular anatomy as possible, like Invasive Cardiovascular Surgery, Cardiovascular Technology, Heart Disease, Pathophysiology of Cardiology, and Invasive Clinical Practice. You should also plan on taking a class on medical terminology and another about medical coding.

  4. Step 4

Take your Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists registration examination. Until you successfully complete this, you won't be able to work as a cardiovascular technician. Practice examinations can be found at the society's website.

  5. Step 5

Intern at a Canadian medical facility. This internship will not only give you inside knowledge about how a medical facility works, you will also come into contact with medical people whom you can use for references when you are looking for a job. Check your college's career center or a search engine called Internweb.com. Select the non-USA option when entering a location. Check the site daily since new internships are always added. Another way to get an internship is to ask the administrator of a local hospital. The average internship lasts 8 to 16 weeks.

  6. Step 6

Submit your resume to medical facilities that typically employee cardiovascular technicians, such as hospitals and catheterization labs. If you aren't sure where to look, visit the Going to Canada website. Enter the term "cardiovascular technician" into the search bar and pick a province, and you'll be rewarded with a list of jobs.
