A wood-turning lathe is a necessary machine for the serious woodworker. It's easy to use once you learn how. Before you understand the mechanics, a wood lathe can be intimidating. Wood lathes come with their own set of special tools: Chisels, parting tools and rough gouges must be kept sharp to reap the maximum benefits. A rough gouge must be sharpened into the shape of a concave fingernail. If you are considering buying a wood lathe and you'll be adding a rough gouge to your collection of lathe tools, read through the following steps to learn how to sharpen one.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3450 rpm grinder White or pink wheel Rough gouge
  1. Step 1

Purchase a 3450 rpm grinder and replace the standard gray wheel with a white or pink one. The gray wheel is far too abrasive for tool sharpening.

  2. Step 2

    Turn on the grinder.

  3. Step 3

Hold the rough gouge securely in both hands. Place one hand on the back of the tool and use the other hand to guide it. Gently move the rough gouge into the grinder wheel.

  4. Step 4

Move the handle of the gouge side to side to evenly grind its nose into a semicircle.

  5. Step 5

Create an oval shape on the cutting end of the gouge by grinding off both corners.

  6. Step 6

Smooth out the facets. Make a concave shape.

Tips & Warnings
  • You must grind the corners of the rough gouge before you first use it. The goal is to get rid of the sharp edges that tend to catch on the workpiece while turning on the lathe.
  • Flying metal can damage both the eyes and skin. Wear protective goggles, a mask and a long-sleeved shirt.
