How to Do the Double Paddle in Tap Dancing

The double paddle in tap dancing requires the dancer to double the single paddle, which consists of heel dig, back brush, step and heel drop. Do two heel dig and brush combinations before dropping your heel in order to execute the double paddle. This is close floor-work. Keep your feet directly beneath you.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tap shoes
  1. Step 1

    Dig your right heel to the front.

  2. Step 2

    Brush back on your right foot.

  3. Step 3

    Heel dig the right foot to the front once again, then back brush the right foot as in Step 2.

  4. Step 4

    Step down on the right and drop the right heel.

  5. Step 5

    Note that the left leg is the supporting leg throughout the double paddle combination. All of the action is occurring on the right foot; therefore, the dancer has to be able to maintain her balance on her left leg.

Tips & Warnings
  • Combine the steps: heel dig, back brush, heel dig, back brush, step heel drop. The count is as follows: and 8 and 1 and 2.When you step down on the right, it frees up your left foot to do the double paddle.
