How to Tie Dye on Butcher Paper
Tie dye often produces images of shirts worn in the '60s by hippies. Tie-dying has come a long way since then. Instead of just making shirts, you can use this technique to make beautiful designs on paper, which can then be used for invitations, book covers and even wrapping paper. Butcher paper is ideal to use since it comes in big rolls that you can cut to size. This is a great craft to do with the kids.

1
Lay out your newspaper on your work surface to protect it. This project is preferably done outside since it can get messy. Even if working on a patio or deck, be sure to cover with newspapers to prevent staining. Fill the spray bottle with rubbing alcohol.
-
2
Roll out your paper to the desired amount you will need. Cut two sheets of paper the same size. If making a book cover measure the height and width of the book. Multiply the width by 2 1/2. Add 2 inches to the height. Cut two pieces of paper to match these dimensions. If making wrapping paper determine how big a piece of paper you will need and cut out two pieces the same size. For invitations, cut out two 8 1/2 x 11-inch pieces of paper.

3
Scrunch up one piece of the paper you cut out into a loose ball. Place it on top of the other piece of paper. Fold the flat piece of paper up over the ball and gather the ends of the paper together. Wrap a rubberband around the ends to hold.
-
4
Draw various designs on the paper with the markers. Be careful not to press too hard so as to make holes in the paper. Use as many colors as you desire. The more colors the brighter and bolder the pattern will be. You can make dots, swirls, circles or any other designs you wish.

5
Holding the paper over the newspaper, spray with the rubbing alcohol. This is what will make the tie-dye pattern on the paper. Spray the paper thoroughly just until damp. Be sure all the colored areas are covered. Do not get the paper dripping wet or it may tear. Set aside on the newspaper to dry for 20 to 30 minutes.

6
Remove the rubberband carefully so as not to tear the paper. Gently open up the outer paper and spread flat on the newspaper. Very carefully undo the ball of paper and spread out flat. Place an old towel over the top of the papers and iron with a low heat iron. This will get out the wrinkles and set the colors. You should have beautiful tie-dyed paper to use for various projects.
