How to Volunteer Online

Today, volunteering doesn't just mean serving food at a soup kitchen or helping build a house. There are plenty of opportunities to help in your community or worldwide right from your home for a variety of organizations, time schedules and skill sets. The three main resources for finding online volunteer opportunities are listed below, as well as how to create your own opportunities.

Go to the Volunteer Match website and click the box that says "Search for Virtual Opportunities." This way only online jobs will show up. Add a keyword or use the advanced search to enter your specific skills or interests.
Browse opportunities and choose one you're interested in, register for an account with Volunteer Match and fill out the form to become a volunteer.

Sign up for an account at The United Nations Online Volunteering portal. It is a service of the United Nations. Search through opportunities from around the world and apply directly to the organization. Assess your skills and decide how you can best help, whether it be writing, translating, web design, research, marketing or any other skill that can be done remotely.

Sign up for an account at Idealist to be able to access everything within the website. Choose "Volunteer Opportunities" on the main page. Type "on-line" into the keyword search to only return virtual opportunities. Select your specializations and skill sets. Another option on Idealist is to create a Volunteer Profile. List your skills, interests, and ways you can help. Wait for organizations to contact you.

Volunteer for an organization that isn't registered on one of the above sites. Tell them you're interested and what skills you can offer. Most non-profit organizations won't turn down a volunteer. Send an email to the volunteer coordinator or organization contact person. Be specific about what you can do and the number of hours you can devote.

This is great! I always love finding ways to do volunteer work that I can share with others who can't leave their houses during the day for any reason (small children, pets, etc.) Awesome article!
