Peel & Core Apples

Apples are one of nature's most popular fruits. Associated with the beginning of sin within Christianity, apples are also fabled as having mystifying capabilities. While we are almost sure that this is not true, apples do however provide many health benefits that can help avoid some cancers, age onset related diseases, and provide a great source of vitamin c and folic acid. Peeling and coring and apple can help to remove unwanted or dangerous parts such as the seeds which contain small amounts of arsenic. There are several ways to peel and core an apple using various devices to make the job easier. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Core the apple first. Plunge the knife into the apple about a quarter inch away from the stem at the top of the apple. Continue to cut in a circular motion around the stem using the same circumference while plunging the knife as deeply as possible into the apple. If necessary, turn the apple over and perform the same process at the bottom around stem as well if the knife does not go all the way through. Make sure to meet the same cutting angle used when performing this step at the top of the apple so that both incisions meet.

    • 2

Remove the core of the apple by pushing it with your fingers or the knife. The core should now slide easily out of the apple leaving a small circular hole in the vertical center. If the core will not budge, then simply cut it again following the exact same pattern you have already made with the knife until you feel the core loosen.

    • 3

Place your thumb or finger inside the apple for support. Placing your finger or thumb inside the hole left by the discarded core will lower the risk of being cut when using a knife to peel the apple. Start at the top of the apple and work your way down when peeling. Angle the sharp side of the knife so that it is just below the surface of the apple's skin.

    • 4

Rotate the apple toward the sharp side of the knife while ensuring to keep the knife just below the apple's skin. While rotating the apple, slowly move the knife downwards on the apple to peel in a screw-like pattern. If the peel breaks off, then just simply restart the process of peeling at the breakage until all of the skin is removed.

    • 5

Put the jagged edge of the coring device centered over the apples stem and simply press down. This process may vary depending on what type of device you have. Peel the apple by using light and abrasive long strokes from to top to bottom or sideways. Do this when a peeler and core device is available for use.

Tips & Warnings

  • An apple can also be cut in half first and a spoon used to remove the core while using the knife to cut out the stem and to peel.

  • Use caution when handling a knife to prevent injury during use.
