Crimping irons were introduced in the early '70s, and were originally used to style Barbara Streisand's hair. Non-celebrities can use these irons to give their hair a retro or '80s look. A crimping iron also affords an easy way to create a "bed head" hairstyle. A crimping iron is no more difficult to use than a straightening or curling iron, and can also be used on almost any type of hair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Heat your crimping iron to the desired temperature. This should only take a few minutes to accomplish.

  2. Step 2

Flip your head down and mist the hair spray all over it.

  3. Step 3

Use hair clips to separate your hair into four sections. Place two in the front of your hair and two in the back.

  4. Step 4

Let down one of the four sections of your hair. Starting at the bottom, leave a small portion (about 1/2 inch thick) of your hair down and clip up the rest.

  5. Step 5

Starting at the top, clamp the iron down on your hair and count to five.

  6. Step 6

Release the iron and move down that section of hair.

  7. Step 7

Continue down that part of your hair and let down the next amount of hair on top of it.

  8. Step 8

Work your way up that section and around the rest of your head until you have achieved your desired look.

Tips & Warnings
  • While going through the sections, if you find that you need more hair spray to seal the look, mist lightly on that particular section of hair. After you have finished, you can leave your hair as is, or brush through it for more of an '80s style.
