Making mud pies is a wonderful part of childhood that should not end. Even adults should spend some time making them. Unknown to many, there is an art to making mud pies. It is much more than mixing dirt and water together.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find good dirt. This is essential to making great mud pies. Look for dirt that is not too sandy. It can't be clay, either. It should be loose, smooth dirt. Make sure that all the rocks, pebbles and gravel are sifted out.

  2. Step 2

Mix the dirt carefully with water. Dig a small hole in the center of the dirt. Slowly pour small amounts of water into the dirt. Mix it carefully with your hands. No spoons are allowed. You have to use your hands. Continue to add small amounts of water until the mud is the consistency of bread dough.

  3. Step 3

Thoroughly knead the mud. Folding the edges into the center, gently press until you can no longer see those edges. Continue to do this until the mud gets firmer. Kneading the mud will make it much easier to form the actual pies. This may take several minutes.

  4. Step 4

Mold the mud into pies. Roll the mud into balls and then flatten those balls. You can make them as thick or as thin as you like.

  5. Step 5

Garnish your mud pies. You can use pretty stones, flowers or leaves. Whatever you have available that will add a little flair to you mud pies will do. Be creative when decorating your mud pies.

  6. Step 6

Serve with whimsical tea, which is best served in pretend cups with pretend sauces. You can use real cups and saucers, but it is best to serve the mud pies using your imagination.
