1
Buy a box of dye to match your skin tone. If your hair is a warm color like black or red, choose a pure black or a reddish-black. Use blue-black if you have lighter skin or hair, and use a natural black if your natural hair color is black and you simply want to enhance it.

2
Buy shampoo and conditioner for black or color-treated hair. Most brands offer either of these. Shampoo for black hair is meant to use only on black hair so as to draw out the color and make it more radiant. Shampoo for color-treated hair protects hair that has been dyed, regardless of color.

Wait 2 or 3 days after dying your hair before you wash it. This gives the color time to set properly without the chemicals from your shampoo reacting with it and possibly causing it to fade. For the first week, use shampoo sparingly, and never wash your hair more than once a day.

4
Use the conditioner included in the hair color box at least once a week to restore the color to its original, dyed shade. This can work for as long as 2 to 3 months afterward, depending on how much the dye has faded over time.

5
Avoid using heated products, such as hair dryers or straighteners, for as long as possible. These can cause your hair to change color or fade faster, especially when it comes to the color black. Limit styling to brushing your hair and using leave-in conditioner to nourish it. After a week, it should be safe to start using heated products again.
