How to Study With the Underwater Crime Scene Unit in College

There are many aspects to crime-scene investigation--and at times, those investigations take place underwater. Becoming an underwater crime-scene investigator is not easy to accomplish, as only one school in the United States offers a training program. However, if you have the drive to participate in this program, it is possible to do so on the Panama City Branch Campus of Florida State University.

      Understand the program. FSU's Panama City Branch Campus is the only program offering in the United States offering education and training in underwater crime-scene investigation. Begun in 2003, the program focuses on putting together two unique schools of learning: diving and criminology.

      Enroll in Florida State University and attend the Panama City Branch Campus.

      Make sure you meet a few important conditions before applying to the program. You must have 1 year in biology, chemistry and physics, and all classes must have entailed lab attendance. You must also have taken math classes that included algebra and trigonometry (calculus and organic chemistry are highly recommended). You need to have an Associates of Arts degree from a community college in Florida or a state college in another statee. You must have a minimum 2.0 grade point average on all college work attempted, and have met oral-capability and written-proficiency requirements.

      Take the required courses. There are five in the underwater crime-scene investigation program, and they must be taken in order: introduction, scientific examination, forensics, underwater crime-scene method and underwater crime investigation.

      Stick with it. While the classes are advanced and can be difficult, this is a unique program that opens doors to a multitude of career opportunities.
