Use a 5-Point Harness Baby Carseat

A 5-point harness baby carseat has two shoulder straps, two straps at the hips and a strap at the crotch. A 5-point harness strap configuration is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Safety Administration.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Install the carseat in the rear-facing direction for a baby. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation. Test the carseat by wiggling it back and forth and front and back to ensure it is tightly in place. Many cities offer free carseat safety inspections at local fire stations.

  2. Step 2

Place your baby in the carseat and place her arms through the arm straps. Make sure the baby is comfortable.

  3. Step 3

Clip the chest straps together at your baby's chest. Right now you do not have to worry about proper placement as you will adjust the chest clip after your baby is fully belted in.

  4. Step 4

Buckle the two shoulder straps to the crotch strap.

  5. Step 5

Move the chest clip to your child's armpit level. If the chest clip is too high, it can interfere with your child's breathing. If the chest clip is too low, your child can move an arm out of the shoulder strap and risk injury in a crash.

  6. Step 6

Perform a final check to make sure that all parts are in place. Tighten the harness if need be. As a rule of thumb, make sure that you can only fit on or two fingers comfortably underneath the secured straps. You will need to do a check for this every time you place your baby in the carseat, as the straps may loosen with use and bulky winter clothes can change the amount of strap you need to properly secure your child.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that the straps are not twisted. Make sure the seat is properly secured with a seat belt. Five-point harness carseats are made for children weighing up to 80 lbs.
  • Keep your child in a rear-facing car seat until they are 1 years old. Keep your child in a forward-facing 5-point harness seat until they are 5.
