How to Use Motorcycle Tie Downs

How to Use Motorcycle Tie Downs thumbnail
Simple tie-downs

Using tie-downs is virtually the only effective way to secure motorcycles. However, the right setup is required for these to work as a safe way to secure bikes. By having the right location, the right mounts and the right placement with tie-down ends, you can quickly and easily get your motorcycle ready for transporting.

Instructions

    • 1

Find or install steel loops, brackets or some other device in your truck or trailer for securing the motorcycle. Place these near to a vertical edge for stopping pressure.

    • 2

Pull the motorcycle up against the vertical edge. Make sure that there is plenty of room to the left and right of the bike, because if something is touching the plastics, seat or frame, it can easily wear the surface due to travel vibration.

    • 3

Secure the tie-downs on the loops or brackets and on the inner section of the handlebars of the motorcycle. Make sure that they are in a location where they will not slip off.

    • 4

Cinch down the straps until the suspension on the motorcycle is quite compressed. This compression will keep the tie-downs tight and keep the motorcycle from sliding around.

    • 5

After the motorcycle has been transported, loosen the tie-downs. If you leave them tight for long periods of time, the suspension on the motorcycle can become weakened and compromised.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have the tie-downs near the securing location before pulling the bike in. Otherwise, it can be hard to reach them while trying to hold up the motorcycle.

  • Always be aware of pinch points when working around motorcycles.
