How to Do a Half Break Time Step in Tap Dancing

The half break time step combination includes shuffles and hops. Essentially, you repeat the first combination--shuffle hop step shuffle step--three times and then add the break, which consists of shuffle hop flap ball change.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tap shoes
  1. Step 1

    Shuffle on the right foot and hop on your left to the count of "8 and 1."

  2. Step 2

    Step down on your right on the count of "2." Shuffle left on the count of "and 3." Step down on the left on the count of "3." This combination is step shuffle step.

  3. Step 3

    Put it all together: shuffle hop step shuffle step.

  4. Step 4

    Repeat the entire combination in Step 3 twice.

  5. Step 5

    Finish with shuffle on your right and a hop on your left to the count of "4 and 1." Flap to the front on your right foot to the count of "6." Ball (left) change (right) on the count of "and 7."

  6. Step 6

    Note that the entire half break time step consists of: Shuffle hop step shuffle step (repeated two more times) and shuffle hop flap ball change.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that a shuffle is a forward and backward brush on the balls of your foot. Ball change requires that the dancer step down on one foot ("ball') followed by stepping down on the other foot ("change").
