If you are thinking about adopting a baby or older child then you will need an adoption homestudy. Part of the application process for the adoption homestudy is writing your autobiography. There are not any set questions, just a blank page, so how do you begin and what should you include in your autobiography for Adoption Homestudy of a baby or older child?

  • Paper
  • Computer or pen

    Reflect on the events of your life that have influenced you to pursue the adoption of a baby or older child.

    Write down the events that most influenced who you are today. These do not need to be in any particular order, just brainstorm. Were you adopted, abused, athletic, or made fun of in school? Did a neighbor influence you by taking you to church every Sunday? Perhaps your family holidays, vacations, or summer camps influenced you most.

    Think about the relationships in your life. What was good about them, what was bad? If they ended, do you know why? If they have lasted to what do you attribute the longevity? How will you parent differently than your parents? If you have had bad experiences like jail, divorce, abuse, or a life-threatening accident have you healed from these experiences. What have you learned, have you matured as a result?

    Put the important life events that you have noted in chronological order from your earliest memories to most current. Use this for your outline.

    Expand on each of your ideas on your outline so the person reading it can understand what you have experienced, and how it influenced or changed whom you are now. Use spell and grammar check before submitting your autobiography.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have a close friend or spouse proofread your autobiography to make sure it is easily understandable.
  • Be honest, share some of the good and bad, so that your autobiography is believable, nobody is perfect.
