Step 1
A leader respects who they are leading. Without your respect to the group or the team, you will never earn the respect from them either.
-
Step 2
A leader is always open to new ideas, and never degrades anyone for their own. As a leader, again you have to respect everyone's opinions, and although you may not agree with what some of your team may think or say, you should at least be happy that they are involved and listening.
-
Step 3
A leader rewards his or her followers for doing things right. As a leader, you must tell your group when things are going well, and thank them for any efforts they may have put forth. Without reward, there is no incentive. Without incentive, your group as a whole will never produce.
-
Step 4
A leader is also a team player. As a leader, you should be involved in whatever processes you implement on your team. It's better to think of yourself as a guide who travels with your group and teaches, rather than a person who just hands out maps and says go.
-
Step 5
A leader never leaves anyone behind. As a leader, you have to understand that your group is only as strong as your weakest link, and it's your responsibility to make sure everyone is involved, participating and contributing to the group as a whole.
-
Step 6
A leader should be in command, but never demand. There is a difference between telling people what should be done and demanding that things must be done. People will be happy to work for you and follow your lead is you respect and encourage them.
-
Step 7
A leader should always be planning ahead. As a leader, you have to know where you are taking the group. Plan ahead and create a plan that can be followed by your peers.
-
Step 8
A leader should always make the final decisions, but never alone. As a leader, you and your group will come across various hurdles where drastic decisions or sacrifices have to be made. You are the ultimate decision maker, but always consider the opinions of your followers before proceeding. You may learn a better way to solve a problem that would of otherwise never been brought up.
-
Step 9
A leader is always confident, even when times are tough. As a leader, you should be confident about your plans, where your group is headed, and where your group will end up. Your confidence is easily transpired throughout the group, and if your moral is low, so will the moral of the rest of your team.
-
Step 10
Lastly and most importantly, a leader knows that he or she has responsibilities. As a leader, you have the responsibility of managing or mediating your team or group, which means you must use all of the strategies previously mentioned, from respecting your team to always planning ahead - in order for your entire group to succeed.
