Step 1
See the red 7? Now try the other numbers.Taking the above picture, I will highlight the areas I'm talking about.
First, lets take the top left 3X3 box. You need a 2, 4, 6, 7, and an 8. Let's attempt to put a 7 into one of the boxes. If you notice, there's a 7 on the top row and on the bottom row. (see the darkened circle) So the only place left for a 7 in the first box is the middle row. Now make sure there's not a 7 on either of those rows. Oops, there's one 7. The red 7 is in the right spot -
Step 2
See the red 4? Now try the other numbers.Lets try the number 4. There's a 4 in the first row down. (see the diamond haze) So the 4 can only be put in either the top middle box or the bottom middle box. However, there's already a 4 in the bottom row across. So the red 4 is in the correct spot.

Step 3
See the red 6? Now try the other numbers.Lets try the number 6. As you can see, there's a 6 in the first row down. (see the checkerboard spot) There's only one more spot in the 3X3 box. The 6 goes there.
-
Step 4
There are two spots left. Let's try one of the other numbers. 8? hmmm..... 2? Uh oh. We have a problem. There are no other 8's or 2's in either rows to go by. Other than guessing, which I wouldn't recommend, we need to move to another 3X3 box.
-
Step 5
See the red 1?Lets go to the bottom right 3X3 box. As you can see, using the number 1, there's only one spot available that doesn't have a 1 in that row. I added a red 1.
-
Step 6
Keep doing this with each 3X3 box. In the end, it should look like this.
