Have you ever tasted homemade apple butter and wished that you had the talent to recreate that wonderful, feel-good taste? Now you can. A crock pot and a few simple ingredients make having homemade apple butter only a day away. Use different varieties of apples for a truly unique taste.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 5-6 pounds of apples (3 or 4 different varieties)
  • 3 cups of sugar
  • 3 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • freezer containers or canning jars and lids
  1. Step 1

Wash and peel all of the apples. Chop the peeled apples finely and place directly into the crock pot that you will be using to cook your apple butter.

  2. Step 2

Mix together the sugar, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Pour this over the apples in the crock pot.

  3. Step 3

Stir the apples and sugar mixture until the sugar is spread around in the apples.

  4. Step 4

Place the lid on the cooker and allow apples to cook for 1 hour on high.

  5. Step 5

After one hour turn the heat down and continue to cook on low for 10-11 hours, stirring occasionally. The apples should become dark brown and get very thick.

  6. Step 6

Remove the lid from the cooker after 10-11 hours on low and allow apples to cook uncovered for another hour.

  7. Step 7

The apple butter will be ready to spoon into freezer containers or jars to be processed in a hot water bath for 10 minutes. If you want smooth apple butter you can put the contents of the crock pot through the blender or food processor before freezing or canning.

Tips & Warnings
  • Eat this with warm biscuits or toast for a country breakfast.
  • Always sterilize canning jars before filling. Allow to process for 10 minutes in hot water bath and you should be able to hear the seal popping in after the jars are removed to cool. If you do not hear the popping sound the jars will have to be reprocessed.
