How to Sew a Skirt That Fits Without a Pattern

How to Sew a Skirt That Fits Without a Pattern thumbnail
You can easily sew a skirt without a pattern.

A handmade skirt can be a thrifty way to get an outfit you can't find in stores, making it unique to you. If you don't want to bother with a sewing pattern, which is typically used to ensure the clothing fits after sewing, you can still make a fashionable skirt that is sure to fit. Creating an elastic waist means you'll be able to get the skirt on and off without having to take careful measurements.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a piece of fabric around your waist, pinching the fabric at the spot where the fabric fits well. Cut the fabric at this spot, plus three inches, so you have a panel of fabric to work with.

    • 2

Fold over the bottom edge of the fabric a 1/2-inch and sew down on the sewing machine, making a smooth hem for the bottom of the skirt.

    • 3

Fold the fabric in half so the two side edges are lined up, making sure the "right side" or side of fabric you want showing is on the inside of the folded fabric. Sew the sides of the fabric together making a tube of material, then turn it inside out so the rough edge of the seam is on the inside.

    • 4

Measure the circumference of the top of the skirt with a measuring tape and cut a piece of elastic the same length. Sew the ends of the elastic together to make a circle. Place the elastic at the top of the skirt. Fold over about one inch of fabric so the elastic is inside the fold. Sew a line under the elastic, making a hem in which the elastic is encased.
