Things You'll Need:
- comb
- shampoo
- conditioner
- silk pillowcase or satin bonnet
-
Step 1
Keep hair and scalp hydrated. Drink plenty of water, and wash hair often to maintain natural curls.
-
Step 2
Use gentle shampoos that contain small amounts of alcohol, or even better – none at all.
-
Step 3
Condition, condition, condition. To maintain natural curls that are easier to comb through, conditioning is a must. A conditioner acts as a detangler when the hair is wet. And it also revitalizes dried out tresses.
-
Step 4
Comb hair gently, preferably when wet. This will ensure that you maintain natural curls with minimum breakage. If necessary, use fingers to get tangles out of the hair before brushing or combing it.
-
Step 5
Avoid excessively using damaging items in or on the hair. Heat from curling irons and blow dryers tend to cause breakage. So use sparingly to maintain natural curls.
-
Step 6
Sleep on a silk pillowcase or in a satin bonnet. This will prevent unnecessary friction on the hair.

on 4/13/2009 Thank you for your helpful article on maintaining natural curls. My daughter has really curly hair and it's really hard to care for. I put your article in my favorites and I will be trying these things on her hair. 5*
