Cooking a turkey doesn't have to be difficult if you plan ahead. Your turkey will turn out moist and delicious when prepared with a poultry rub and baked it an oven bag. It's so easy that even beginning cooks can handle this process.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • thawed turkey
  • oven bag for roasting
  • small onion
  • half stick of butter or margarine
  • two ribs of celery
  • poultry seasoning ingredients (salt, paprika, cayenne pepper, onion powder, thyme, white pepper, garlic powder, black pepper)
  • olive oil
  1. Step 1

Remove the innards from inside of the completely thawed turkey and either discard or refrigerate for later use.

  2. Step 2

Rinse the turkey inside and out and pat dry. Stand the turkey on end so that the excess water will drain out of its cavity.

  3. Step 3

Insert a small halved onion, several cut up ribs of celery and a half stick of butter or margarine into the cavity.

  4. Step 4

Rub the outside of the turkey down with olive oil.

  5. Step 5

Prepare the homemade poultry rub by mixing together 2 teaspoons salt, 2 teaspoons paprika, 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon thyme, 1 teaspoon white pepper, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.

  6. Step 6

Rub the prepared poultry seasoning onto the outside of the bird, on the skin and under the skin around the breast. Carefully replace any skin that you disturb during this process.

  7. Step 7

Place the prepped turkey into an oven bag and place on a roasting pan into an oven preheated to 325 degrees.

  8. Step 8

Check to see if the turkey is done at about 2.5 hours in. A 12 pound turkey will take about 3-3.5 hours to cook. The turkey is done when a thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh reaches 180 degrees.

Tips & Warnings
  • Allow your cooked turkey to sit for 15-20 minutes after removing from the oven before carving.
  • Never allow a frozen turkey to thaw at room temperature. Bacteria can grow, causing those who consume the cooked turkey to become very ill.
