Things You'll Need:
- 3 Tablespoons of Sugar
- 1 Tablespoon baking soda
- 1 Cotton ball
- 1 Fuse (hobby store
- 3 Tablespoons of powdered dye (find at a craft or hobby store)if you want it colored.
- 1 Cardboard tube, like a toilet paper roll
- 1 Dry erase marker or something equivilent in diameter.
- 1 Lighter
- 4 Tablespoons Potasium Nitrate (found in garden stores, just ask for it)
- Duct tape
-
Step 1
Mix potassium nitrate and sugar in a small sauce pan over low heat. The sugar will begin to caramelize (turn the color of caramel) with the potassium nitrate. Keep stirring the mixture over low heat until the solution resembles a peanut-buttery-texture.
-
Step 2
Add the baking soda to the mix and mix thoroughly while maintaining low heat.
-
Step 3
Next, add the powdered dye if desired and mix thurougly. It really is best to have powdered dye because there are some really cool colors that you can make. Nobody really likes plain Popsicles if you know what I mean.
-
Step 4
Cut 1/4 of the cardboard tube off. Now, put the cardboard tube on a flat surface facing upright or for easier use, on top of wax paper. Then fill the tube with the mix, leaving about 1/2 inch from the top.
-
Step 5
Place the dry erase marker or similar item into the middle of the solution about an inch deep and allow to dry for several hours until hardened completely.
-
Step 6
Remove the marker or substitute. You should have a hole in the center of the mix. This is where you are now going to place your fuse. Hold the fuse firmly in place by using cotton from the cotton ball to fill the gaps in the hole. Make sure the fuse is touching a side of the mix.
-
Step 7
Over your smoke bomb completely with duct tape, leaving a hole at the top of the fuse to emerge.
-
Step 8
Go outside in a vast area, and light the fuse and get away quickly. If all went well, you will see brightly colored smoke filling the area. Good Luck!
