How to Care for Relaxed Black Hair

How to Care for Relaxed Black Hair thumbnail
Caring for relaxed black hair is challenging but yields beautiful results.

With a unique structure, black hair is naturally dry and prone to breakage and even hair loss. It is even more challenging to care for when it's relaxed. For women who prefer straight hair, they can achieve this look through relaxing their hair, a chemical process that loosens curly black hair into straight hair. With a consistent hair care regimen relaxed black hair can be very manageable. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use an antistatic or ionic hair brush to comb through your relaxed hair without damaging it. Hair is most vulnerable to damage when it's wet.

    • 2

Wear a satin cap or bonnet at night. This simple trick will help maintain body in your relaxed hair.

    • 3

Use a wide tooth comb when styling your hair. As opposed to regular combs, wide tooth combs pull hair less.

    • 4

Spray your relaxed hair with a light sheen once or twice a week for added shine. Do not use heavy oils, grease, creams or gels. These weigh the hair down, reducing body and bounce, and can cause extra flaking.

    • 5

Wash and condition hair once a week. This is important for a healthy scalp.

    • 6

Trim hair regularly. Keeping relaxed hair trimmed promotes growth and maintains body.

I agree with LovelySistah, lye and no-lye relaxers are both just as harsh as the other. They both can cause hair damage if the hair is not properly maintained. As far as trimming, it only makes the hair shorter and of course it rids you of the split ends. As LovelySistah said, the hair grows from the scalp and not from the ends, so scalp maintenance and taking care of your body are the most important things if you want to see hair growth. Drinking water can prevent hair dryness and taking vitamins can promote hair growth/

Hair is actually more suscetible to breakage when dry. Water is a natural detangler. Also, lye or no-lye relaxers still are equally harsh on the hair and scalp. That is a HUGE myth. Trimming your hair will not promote growth, it will simply rid your hair of split ends and damage. Hair grows from the scalp....do scalp massages with essential oils dilluted in carier oils to promote healthy growth. Trimming your hair will only make it...shorter.
