Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Assembling a wood futon is not too challenging. Most manufacturers use similar hardware and components. This "Ehow" article will show you how to get your wood futon back together or assembled and should cover most styles.

First, layout and identify all of your parts. You should have two futon arms, two rails a seat and back rack section. Hardware should include 8 bolts, 8 barrel nuts, 6 metal pins, 6 washers, 6 cotter clips, 4 nylon rollers and some models will include what are called kicker blocks (2 wood kicker blocks, 2 metal pins, 2 washers and 2 cotter clips if you have these on your model.)

  2. Step 2

Second, take the two arms and face them towards each other but spread away from each other. Make sure the routed out grooves in the sides of the arms are facing each other. Next grab a stretcher rail and align it to the front of the futon arms where the pre-drilled holes are. Run 2 bolts through the outside of each arm and insert 2 barrel nuts into each pre-drilled hole in stretcher rail. The bolts connect into these barrel nuts and are secured with your allen wrench. Tighten these but leave them loose for now.

  3. Step 3

Third, take the back rack and locate the three holes drilled into the sides. The hole closest to the end is used to connect up with the seat rack. The two other holes are used to connect the nylon rollers. Go ahead and grab the nylon rollers and insert a metal pin through each one by pushing the metal pins through the smaller end of the nylon roller. Now insert these on the outside of the back rack in holes and on the other side place a washer over each pin then secure them with a cotter clip on each pin.

  4. Step 4

Now connect the seat and back rack sections. The seat section will have a hole on each side closest to the ends. Line up the holes on the ends of the back rack and seat rack and push metal pins through each from the outside. On the inside use a washer and then a cotter clip to secure these pins.

  5. Step 5

Now go ahead and take the seat and back rack assembly and move it in between the arms. Be careful not to scratch the tops of your futon arms while you do this. Line up the top nylon rollers on the back rest into the routed out grooves that run up and down. Line up the lower nylon rollers into the routed out grooves that run left and right. Push the arms in towards each.

  6. Step 6

Now take the back stretcher and connect it to the arms. Use two bolts on each side and insert the barrel nuts into the pre-drilled holes in the stretcher rail. Connect the bolts into these barrel nuts using your allen wrench. Now go the front of your futon and tighten those bolts in as well. Your futon is ready to be used.

  7. Step 7

Additional steps: (Depending on your frame)
Kicker Blocks - Your frame may use what are called kicker blocks which hang from the seat rack. If this is the case insert a metal pin into each block. Then insert that into the pre-drilled holes in the side of the seat rack that are closer to the middle of the side. Use a washer and cotter clip on the other side to secure these to the seat. If your futon does not have these you may skip this step.

Additional steps: (Depending on your frame)
Futon Stops - The manufacturer of your frame may have provided plastic stops which attach beneath the front seat rack. A wood screw on each stop will be used to secure it to the seat. use your Phillips screwdriver to do this. Some manufacturers pre-install this so you may be able to skip this step.

Tips & Warnings
  • Have a helper available if you aren't able to lift heavy items.
  • Be sure to have an Allen Wrench and Phillips Screwdriver handy.
  • Be sure to avoid hitting your nylon rollers on the arm tops during assembly.
