It's not hard to write a thank-you note that looks like you spent some time and thought on it. (and it does NOT take a lot of time or thought when you follow this formula either!)

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • thank-you cards (choose smaller ones without preprinted messages-those spell "too lazy to be bothered thanking me properly")
  • pen,stamps
  1. Step 1

Start with a Dear so and so or a Hi Aunt Fanny.

  2. Step 2

Your first sentence is a direct thank you for the gift/service. "Thank you for the lovely toilet-paper cover you knitted." "Thanks for the gift-card to the hardware store" Try to use at least one descriptive word about it--use a word the GIVER would choose not necessarily your personal opinion. As long as Aunt Fanny thinks her creation is lovely you are showing genuine appreciation for her hard work. Which leads to the second sentence.

  3. Step 3

Use the next sentence to complement the gift or how you will use it. "This will add charm to our bathroom while keeping a spare roll handy!" "We can always add to our toggle-bolt supply." There is ALWAYS something nice to say-just find it! If the sweater is itchy and doesn't fit complement the color--throw an ESPECIALLY in if you need to.. " I especially like the way the cuffs fit."

  4. Step 4

Now add a sentence that complements the giver or praises their work. Begin this sentence with a restatement of thanks in different words. "I appreciate all the work you put into making it especially for us." "Thanks for your generosity."

  5. Step 5

Finally add an extra note of appreciation if the gift was for an event. "We appreciate your sharing in our big day." "My birthday was more special because you were there."

Tips & Warnings
  • Write with a slightly larger hand to give the appearance of more words--DO NOT overdo this--it's a fine line.
  • Always hand-write your notes-the personal touch is very meaningful.
  • Avoid blanket phrases like "Thanks for the gift." and "It will come in handy." and anything else that makes the note look pre-canned. Thank you notes should look as if you spent as much time on them as the giver did choosing and wrapping the gift.
  • Don't throw around words like generous when they are not true. Granny on a fixed incomes $5.00 is generous -rich uncle Herbert's $20 not.so.much. Keep your compliments genuine.
