Things You'll Need:

  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Research time
  1. Step 1
Remeber once you sing the contract it's to late to ask for more

OK let's face it, the Military IS NOT for every one. For those that are considering it there are somethings you need to know before you go in to the recruiting office that will save you time and energy as well as finding out later that you did not get what you wanted.

  2. Step 2
Remember it's about whats best for YOU.
Remember it's about whats best for YOU.

U.S. Army, U.S. Marines, U.S. Navy, Air Force and yes even the Coast Guard all have there own Recruiters, every branch sends there own service members to schools designed to teach communication skills and public sales, That's right Public Sales these well dressed service members are there to sell and idea and program. Knowing this before hand will help keep you grounded and focused on the best deal for you.

  3. Step 3
It works best for you and your service if YOU are happy with the job you pick.
It works best for you and your service if YOU are happy with the job you pick.

Understand the terms they use, for example " Needs of the Military" normally means that you will be assigned a job or duty location that best suits that service at that time. Many services will offer a chance to try out for there special forces,S.E.A.L's Force Recon, Rangers; remember it is only that a chance. Ask what the wash out rate is. Ask what happens if you do not make selection? How soon can you re-apply? In my time as a recruiter I saw many young many try out and rarely saw any make selection the first time out.
Understand your job field you are singing up for just because you have singed for a job in intelligence DOES NOT mean you will be James Bond, you could wind up in a tiny room staring at a Map, Don't let yourself be star struck by the job title.

  4. Step 4
There is money to be had IF you are willing to work for it
There is money to be had IF you are willing to work for it

Understand bonus programs and when you will get it. Some bonus are just for singing up for that service others are for going to your basic training during certain times of the year. A majority of the larger bonus are going to be for hard to fill jobs. 2 things to know about this, Why is that job so hard to fill? And in most cases you WILL NOT receive any of that bonus money until AFTER you graduate that job school and in some cases that can be up to a year.

  5. Step 5
A little time on your part can make picking your service and job much less traumatic.
A little time on your part can make picking your service and job much less traumatic.

The biggest thing you can do for yourself is be informed check the web all services have there own web sites as well as literally hundreds of 3rd party sites that cover information on almost every job there is to be had.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always ask to see it in your contract.
  • Keep copies of all your bonuses and incentive programs.
  • Remember to make them work for you, if you are feeling rushed slow down to make sure you read your contract, if you were promised money or duty location make them show it to you in the contract BEFORE you sign and again BEFORE you travel to your basic training.
