Step 1
The biggest problem people have is their resolutions are not realistic. Yes, it is good to challenge yourself by choosing a goal that's not too obtainable, but too difficult of goals will be impossible and won't even be attempted.
In line with keeping your resolutions realistic, don't make too many of them! Three or four resolutions are plenty. Too many and you will spread yourself too thin and won't be able to attain any of them if you keep it up. Pick your top most important resolutions so you can focus all your energy where it counts. -
Step 2
The next biggest problem is that they are not specific enough! If a goal isn't specific, you can't even be sure you attained it. A goal of "losing weight" is not specific enough--how much do you want to lose? How do you plan to do it? Putting together a plan will help narrow your goal. For example, "lose weight" might become "exercise three times a week to try to lose 10 lbs by the summer." Keep track of your goal if it is measurable and that can help keep you motivated!
-
Step 3
Stick to it! If you're like me, I work on my goal through January and part of Februrary, but then get burnt out. If your goal is to exercise three times a week, don't get excited and burn yourself out doing it 6 days a week! Follow the plan you put together and keep it up. It's ok if you slip up or forget, because you can start up again as soon as you remember.
-
Step 4
Tell friends and family about your goals! Keeping them a secret is a big mistake. If they slip your mind, or you forget, you might not accomplish them. With friends and family helping, you'll have all the reminders and motivation you need. In additional, you may find out they have similar goals, and you can work together for added strength!
