Peices of a Saxophone

You will learn how to put an Alto Saxophone together, preparing it to be played.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Alto Saxophone (body and neck)
  • Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece and Ligature
  • Alto Saxophone reeds
  • Cork Grease
  1. Step 1

First start off by taking the "neck" and place it in the body. The neck cork should be facing away from the bell of the saxophone.

  2. Step 2

Then take some cork grease, and apply onto the neck cork. You only need to apply enough to make the cork slightly lubricated.

  3. Step 3

Next we will be fastening the Reed to the mouthpiece using the ligature. Take your reed, and place it so the thick part of the reed is facing the back part of the mouthpiece. Slide the thin part of the reed up to the edge at the front of the mouth piece.

  4. Step 4

Now, while holding the reed and the mouthpiece together, take the ligature, and slide it onto the mouthpiece. Position the ligature, so it is as far back as the back of the reed. Now slowly begin to tighten the screws on the ligature, to hold the reed in place.

  5. Step 5

Finally, that the Reed is firmly fixed to the mouthpiece, take your mouthpiece, and slide it onto the neck cork of the saxophone. You will only need to slide the mouthpiece about half way down the cork, maybe less on some saxophones, to make sure it stays on the neck of the saxophone. You have finished your assembly of the alto saxophone, now you can enjoy playing it for yourself.

Tips & Warnings
  • You only need to apply the cork grease, when the cork appears dry, and you think that the mouth piece wont slide on easily.
  • Positioning the ligature on the far back of the reed makes the reed stay in place better.
  • If you fail to apply the cork grease, and the cork is too dry, then you risk damaging the cork on the neck of the saxophone, which can be quite costly to fix.
  • If you apply to much cork grease, it can make it difficult to keep the mouthpiece on.
