It doesn't always take a formal sit down situation for you to teach your preschooler numbers and counting. You can use everyday situations and games to help your preschooler learn. Here are some simple ways that you can teach your preschooler numbers and counting.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Preschool age child
  1. Step 1

Sing songs that have counting in them, such as "This Old Man," "The Ants Go Marching," and even "Rock Around the Clock." You can even get creative and make up your own silly song that has counting and numbers in it and make sure to get your child involved in the singing.

  2. Step 2

Have your preschooler help you bake in the kitchen. Baking is a great time to teach them about measurements and the amounts and numbers required for the ingredients. Your child will have so much fun helping mommy or daddy bake, that they probably won't even realize that you are secretly teaching them numbers and measurements.

  3. Step 3

Do some simple math with your preschooler by counting your child's body parts that they have. Help them count out how many toes, fingers, eyes, ears, and teeth they have.

  4. Step 4

Play classic games such as "go fish" or number guessing games in which you give hints to your child if a number is higher or lower than the one that your child says. Pick simple numbers that they know and can easily guess depending on their age, like numbers between 1-10.

  5. Step 5

When coloring, ask your child to draw you a picture with a certain amount of something on it. Ask them to draw 3 flowers and 2 dogs in the picture. Help them out with the numbers. You can also have him draw his numbers on the picture, so he gets used to drawing a number 6 or 9 and knows what it looks like.

  6. Step 6

Incorporate physical activity with counting by asking your child how many times he can do something. Ask him if he can jump up and down 3 times. Or see if he can hop on his foot 2 times. This also helps him to be more physically active while learning.

Tips & Warnings
  • Teaching your preschooler can be more productive when you are having fun and not strictly enforcing learning on them.
