Things You'll Need:
- A Christmas Tree
- Large bulbs
- Family ornaments
- Ribbon or Garland
- Tree Topper
- Tree Skirt
-
Step 1
First select a tree. People have their own traditions. Both artificial and real trees are beautiful. Know the measurements of the space you have selected to display before you purchase a tree. If shopping for a real tree look for a one that is green and healthy, and has a nice triangular shape with full branches. Remember to keep your tree well watered!
-
Step 2
Select a spot for your tree. In front of a window so that it can be seen from the street is ideal but not always possible. If this is the case, select a spot in the family room where everyone can admire it.
-
Step 3
The lights should always be the first thing on the tree. As a guideline, you will need 100 to 150 lights per vertical foot of the tree. Lights come in many different varieties. Small clear lights give a more elegant effect while colored lights give a festive effect. Bubble lights are another option for a fun retro tree! Always check your lights before stringing them and have spare bulbs handy. Start at the bottom of the tree and work your way from the base, out to the branches and up the tree. Another unique effect is using flasher or chaser lights for a little extra sparkle!
-
Step 4
You can never, I repeat never, have to many ornaments! There's nothing worse than a Christmas tree with bald spots! Use traditional glass ball ornaments close to the base of the tree and special family heirloom ornaments on the tips of the branches for a really full look. Place heavier ornaments on the sturdy branches usually at the top of the tree. If you still need more, purchase some floral "pics" from your local craft store and put them in the branches.
-
Step 5
There are also many options for garland. Stores now sell garland in many sparkling colors but consider some other ideas. An old favorite is to get the family together to watch some Christmas movies and string berries and popcorn. This gives a tree a rustic country look. An updated version of this would be to use large beads from a craft store. Tinsel can be used to give an old fashioned ice sickle look. A very classic look right now is to use wired Ribbon which can be hung around the tree just like garland, or vertically from a bow at the top of the tree
-
Step 6
Traditionally, the last thing placed on the tree is star or angel tree topper, but some use a bow. A more unique approach could be to use a family heirloom, or even a dried wedding bouquet.
