Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Take some time off. You may think that you should start looking for a job immediately, but you need to wait at least 3 days. After 3 days you will be more focused and ready to move on to a new job.

  2. Step 2

    Realize that you will probably feel one or more of the following emotions during the first few days. These are normal.
    * Denial
    * Anger
    * Doubt
    * Fear
    * Sorrow
    * Guilt
    * Worthlessness

  3. Step 3

    Apply for unemployment if you are eligible. Get this started soon because it takes a few weeks for the paperwork to be completed.

  4. Step 4

    Figure out how long you can live without a paycheck. Take your total savings and divide it by your monthly expenses. If you have less than one month of expenses in savings and severance pay you will need to be less selective in your new job.

  5. Step 5

    Decide what you want to do next in your life. You can either do the same type of work, do something similar, do something completely different, or start your own company. You could also retire if you are ready.

  6. Step 6

    Create a resume. There are many resources on the internet with resume tips and examples.

  7. Step 7

    Talk to your network. Tell people that you know about your job loss and what you want to do next. Ask them if they know of anyone that might work in the same field that you are looking for.

  8. Step 8

    Start applying for jobs. At this point you are moving on to the next step in the process, finding a new job.

  • Don't wait too long before starting the search for a new job.

  • It will take some time to come to terms with the loss of your job. If you are still not feeling well after a couple of weeks you may need professional help before it becomes depression.
