How to safely correspond with prison pen pals. Things to look out for, like nigerian fraud scams, and sites and places that make finding and listing pen pals free and easy.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a computer and the internet....pen or pencil stamps and envelope optional
  1. Step 1

Find your prison pen pal, make sure you have the appropriate information such as ID number, full name, DOB optional but sometimes helps.

  2. Step 2

using a website like Konmart.com or inmatefinder.com look up the inmate's information, usually this will show you why they are incarcerated....if you see something such as check fraud, monetary instrument fraud, or anything that implies con artist stay clear, this person could be trying to use these free prison pen pals sites to lure potential scam victims.

  3. Step 3

Never send an inmate money unless you have an extremely good report with them. If any inmate should ask you to deposit some checks they send you DO NOT take them up on the offer, even if they offer some sort of cash incentive. This can often times end up being similar to a Nigerian fraud scam, wherein you deposit the checks, withdraw the funds and give them to the inmate, a month later your bank informs you the checks were fraudulent.....you end up out the money, the scammer ends up with cold hard cash...and you have no recource.

on 11/16/2008 Pen pal websites are good also. I suggest using a PO Box if you are not sure. If you want something different you can find addresses of well know serial killers at askaconvict. You can also ask Inmates questions anonymously.
