How to Make a Proposition 8 Protest Poster (for gays)

The passing of Proposition 8 was a major blow to gay women and men everywhere, who see it as a direct violation of their civil rights. Why should heterosexual couples be the only ones allowed to marry in California? This article will help gay protestors create posters that will get their point across in the most effective manner, and possibly change the minds of those in favor of the ban.

1. 
    
   Negative images of the Christian cross are not effective.

   Appeal to the Religious Right - find a Bible, preferably with some type of concordance, and note verses regarding Christ's love, especially those that command Christians to love others. This will speak to real Christians and you need to get them on board if marriage will ever be legal for same sex couples in this state. One example: Mark 12:31 "Love your neighbor as yourself."

   Appeal to families. Write lines such as, "What if your gay daughter wanted to marry?" (Heteros can swallow having a gay daughter more than having a gay son) or "Don't take away our right to a family." Make it personal so that those in favor of Prop 8 can empathize.

   The ban on interracial marriage was overturned by the US Supreme Court in 1967.

   Appeal to couples in mixed race marriages. "A few years ago, blacks could not marry whites!" These couples may feel an obligation to support your rights since you are supporting theirs.

   No light colored markers, or hard-to-read font!

   Write your posters with large, dark letters in a simple font. No cursive, "bubble" letters, or other hard-to-read style. You want to be taken seriously and your point to be made. If the poster is legible AND makes a good point, news stations are more likely to focus in on your sign, giving you national attention.

Tips & Warnings

• Avoid putting down the groups who may be against you. It will just incite them, not further your cause.
• Avoid embellishments that will overshadow your message.
• Avoid images that will remind your opponents of the gay lifestyle (rainbows, pink triangles etc.) You want them to identify with you, not see you as different.
