Does your kitchen sponge start smelling after a few uses? Want to sterilize that nasty smelling sponge and kill all of the bacteria?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a wet sponge
  • a microwave oven
  • a pair of tongs or oven mits
  1. Step 1

I love using a sponges in the kitchen but after a few days of use I find that they start taking on that sour smell. There's also a lot of concern about sponges being harbingers of bacteria. This will take the smell away and kill all of the bacteria as well!

Take a wet smelly sponge and put it in your microwave. Make sure it's wet! Do not try this with a dry sponge. You wouldn't like what happens.

  2. Step 2

Microwave for 2 minutes on High. No more than two minutes though. The sponge will break down if you do it longer.

  3. Step 3

Remove with a pair of tongs or oven mit. Careful, it's really hot! You want to make sure that you let the sponge completely cool down before you try to use it. This will take 20 minutes or so.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your sponges will be clean, disinfected (very important!)and no longer smelly. I do this with all my sponges at least once a week. I haven't found that it breaks the sponge down at all and it has saved me money by not having to buy sponges so often.
  • Do not try this with a dry sponge! It will catch on fire. Make sure the sponge is completely wet when you do this.
