Write the Climax in a Story

You're at the highest peak in the roller coaster ride, and there's nowhere to go now but down. The climax is the release your protagonist finds after a long and arduous struggle against the odds. This article will look at different way to do hit the climax in your story.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Imagination
  • Pen and Paper
  • Computer/Typewriter
  • Story Outline and Notes
  1. Step 1

Recognition: This works well in crime or detective type stories but you can use it in any type. This is the part where the character puts all the pieces together and has an epiphany. He suddenly realizes what's really going on. How he reacts to this knowledge is the "explosion" of the story - the climax.

  2. Step 2

Decision: The character decides what to do and does it. Does he decide to kill the antagonist or let him live? This bring into light more detail about the type of person your character is - merciful or does he have an evil side as well?

  3. Step 3

Resolution: Your protagonist has struggled through battles against other characters, nature, and himself. The resolution climax is where your character is in his final battle - the major conflict. Decide whether he will win or lose (not all stories are "happily ever after.") This battle will need more detail than the others describing how your protagonist feels - run down and close to giving up or spurred to fnish what he started?

Tips & Warnings
  • Timing is crucial! If the crisis occurs too early, readers will expect still another turning point. If it occurs too late, readers will get impatient.
