Things You'll Need:
- Doctor
- Diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Wrist Braces
-
Step 1
If you haven't been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, make an appointment with your doctor to find out if you really have it and you aren't suffering from another condition.
-
Step 2
Your doctor can give you advice on which types of braces work best for you. Your doctor may give you a prescription for a particular kind of wrist brace. If she doesn't, you can choose a good pair of braces for yourself. Your local pharmacy or medical equipment store are the most common places to find wrist braces. The selection is larger in a medical supply store but prices are lower in a pharmacy.
-
Step 3
Choose a wrist brace that is made for carpal tunnel syndrome. There may be a variety of wrist and hand braces. Choose one that is sturdy and keeps you wrist on an even level. It should have a metal plate shaped like the palm of your hand on the bottom side.
-
Step 4
Don't choose a brace that immobilizes your thumb. The muscles in your thumbs and hands can atrophy and make recovery harder.
-
Step 5
If you are in doubt about your choice, ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
-
Step 6
Hand gloves provide some support and are sold in pharmacies as well. However, they don't provide the support that you need for carpal tunnel syndrome. They are usually made of light and flexible material that provides little support.
-
Step 7
If you can get a referral to an occupation therapist, you can have custom made wrist braces.
