Staying safe at the school bus stop is a lesson parents often forget to teach their kids. Maybe they assume this is taught in school. Even if it is taught in school, this is a lesson every parent should teach their kids. A lesson in school bus stop safety could prevent your child from being seriously injured or even worse by a school bus. If they hear it from you, it will reinforce anything they may be told at school or by their bus driver.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Explain to your kids that you want to show them how to be safe at the bus stop. Tell them to dress for the weather, get their book bags and that you are going out to the bus stop. If they pay close attention a treat will be served afterward. This part is optional but it does make it a better experience for all.

  2. Step 2

Their book bags should be over both shoulders assuming they have that kind. Older kids now often use the one shoulder bags. They should not have key chains dangling from their bags. These can get caught in a railing getting on and off the bus or can hit another kid in the face by accident. Proper dress is important. If their coat is dark, putting reflective tape on its a good idea. This ofcourse so the bus driver can see them better. Also shoes with good grip are really important to prevent slipping.

  3. Step 3

Go to the edge of the road and depending on your child's sizes tell them to take three or four GIANT steps back. They should never be closer to the road than this until the bus is completely stopped. NO horsing around on the road ever. No running up to the stop. Help them make a good habit of being out 5 minutes early.

  4. Step 4

If they have to cross the road, they need to wait until the driver signals them it is safe to cross. They need to walk out around the safety arm so that the driver can see them at all times.

  5. Step 5

This is super important! Tell your child there is an area all around close to the bus where the driver can not see. This is a danger zone. If your child drops something getting on or off the bus they should never try to pick it up right away. They need to tell the driver and the driver will instruct them. Remind them that the driver may not see them if they try to pick something up in front of or beside the bus. So if they can't tell the driver they just need to leave it there till the bus pulls away. Then get a parent to help. If they are old enough they can get it on their own after the bus has pulled away. For the same reason they should not get the mail until the bus has pulled away.

  6. Step 6

They need to be told to go straight home after being dropped off. This way you know where they are. Remind them to always ask before staying outside to play or going to a friends house. Believe it or not kids have done this and had frantic parents and the school looking for them.
