Step 1
If you have a whole house air conditioner unit, set the thermostat higher than you normally would such as 78 degrees. Close off any rooms you do not use. Seal the vents in the unused rooms.
-
Step 2
Use room box fans, floor stand fans, or install ceiling fans. The air distribution from fans cools our bodies efficiently allowing us to use lower air conditioning settings.
-
Step 3
Install small energy efficient room air conditioners in a couple rooms that you use all the time such as the kitchen/living area and bedroom. I normally turn the unit off when I leave for work and on when I return from work. This has saved me a bundle in cooling bills. I also found during our hottest days, it is more efficient to leave the unit on a setting to allow a small amount of cooling. Once I return from work, I adjust the unit for my comfort. Try to find these on sale at home improvement stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot. Discount stores such as Wal-Mart and Big Lots are excellent sources for low price units.
-
Step 4
Cover you windows with insulated drapes. If this is not practical or economical for you, Wal-Mart, Ebay, and other home improvement stores sell a plastic reflective survival blanket for about $2.00. With the shiny side facing outside to reflect more sunlight, attach the survival blanket to the window seals with double face tape or tacks.
