Things You'll Need:
- yarn
- crochet hook
-
Step 1
Start with a chain using an even number of stitches. See my articles listed in the reference section for more details on how to start and create a chain.
-
Step 2
To start the first row, put the yarn over the hook. Insert the end of the hook in the fourth chain from the hook by placing it under the 2 top threads. See the diagram for a visual illustration.
-
Step 3
Put the yarn over the hook and draw it through (under) the 2 top threads of the chain. This will leave 3 loops on the hook. See the diagram for a visual illustration.
-
Step 4
Place the yarn over the hook and draw it through the first 2 loops on the hook. This will leave 2 loops on the hook. See the diagram for a visual illustration.
-
Step 5
Place the yarn over the hook again and draw it through the remaining 2 loops on the hook. This will leave 1 loop left on the hook. See the diagram for a visual illustration.
-
Step 6
This completes the first double crochet stitch. To do the next double crochet stitch, start over at step 2 inserting the hook into the front of the next chain stitch (the one beside the double crochet stitch you just made).
-
Step 7
At the end of the row, to begin your second row, chain three stitches. See the diagram for a visual illustration.
-
Step 8
Turn the work so that the reverse side is towards you (you will be working from the right side of the piece towards the left). Place the yarn over the hook and insert the hook under the top 2 threads of the 5th stitch from the hook. See the diagram for a visual illustration. Proceed with the double crochet stitches throughout the length of the piece.
-
Step 9
Repeat steps 7 and 8 until the piece is the length you desire. Keep the loops loose enough to work with. It WILL become much easier with practice.
