Crochet is a wonderful hobby and, with a little patience and practice, is easy to learn. Crochet begins with a slipknot or loop. This is the first step to creating a chain stitch which is the basis of all crochet patterns.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • yarn
  • crochet hook
  1. Step 1

To make the knot, hold the thread or yarn about 2 inches from the end. Form a small circle by bringing the ball end of the thread over the short end. Please see the diagram for a visual illustration.

  2. Step 2

Hold the circle in place between the left thumb and index finger. Insert the hook through the circle, holding it in the right hand as shown. Please see the diagram for a visual illustration.

  3. Step 3

Use the end of the hook to pick up the ball end of the thread and draw it through the circle, forming a small loop. This "loop" remaining in the crochet hook is your slip knot or starting loop. Please see the diagram for a visual illustration.

  4. Step 4

So that the loop fits the hook more closely, pull the yarn ends in opposite directions. The loop should be just loose enough to allow the hook to pass through it with ease.
