Things You'll Need:
- Basket, approx. 5x8
- Excelsior
- Tea Lights
- Fresh apples- 7 or 8
-
Step 1
A FEW ITEMS.....Search out the most perfect basket you can find, you may even have one around the house that will work for you. Don't forget to consider the size of your table when choosing the basket. Also inspect the basket to make sure it's clean and polished. Add the excelsior to the bottom of the basket, this is a dried grass like material that will cushion the apples and give some height as well.
-
Step 2
Now, to fix the apples; pile 5 of the apples in the bottom of the basket. Check to see how many other apples will fit on top of the bottom layer. Take one of the tea lights and pull the candle out of the metal cup by pulling up with the wick. Take the metal cup and center it over the stem on the top of the apple. Using a pen, draw a line on the apple around the metal cup. With a sharp paring knife, cut straight down about 1-1/4" all around the line. If you have a watermelon baller, use this to remove enough of the apple so that the metal cup will sit inside the hole. Make sure the hole is deep enough so that the metal cup does not show. Insert the candle back into it's metal cup and place in the apple. Repeat with the other apple(s).
-
Step 3
SMALL AND PRETTYAll you need to add is a few cinnamon sticks or maybe a few wheat stems. The apples should last about a week before they will begin to rot. In the meantime since you've cut into the apple, it's aroma will carry all over and will be perfect on the dinner table.
