How to Lubricate the Hood/Trunk Latch in a Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe is a compact SUV. If you own a 2001 or newer Hyundai Santa Fe, lubricate the hood (no trunk) latch once every 5,000 miles, or as often as you change your vehicle's oil.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean rag
  • Sandpaper or wire brush
  • WD-40
  • Lithium grease

Instructions

    • 1

Grab some WD-40, a common staple in garages across the country, as well as a spray lithium grease. WD-40 will be found in the same area of the store as the lithium grease.

    • 2

Prep the hood latch of your Hyundai Santa Fe before you try to lubricate it. To prep the latch, all you need to do is clean it. You want to remove surface debris and dirt and dig out any gunk that has fallen into the latch assembly.

    • 3

Use your fingers to dig out debris. If your fingers are too big to fit into the latch assembly, you can wrap a screwdriver in your rag and use that to swab out the inside of the latch assembly.

    • 4

Get rid of any rust that has developed on the hood latch. Use sandpaper to rub off the rust or a wire brush to brush away the rust spots. After the rust is removed, spray the area liberally with WD-40 and then wipe of any excess.

    • 5

Lubricate the hood latch on your Hyundai Santa Fe. To do this, spray your lithium grease into the latch as well as around the interior edges of the latch. Open and close the hood a few times to test the latch. Apply a second round of lubricant to the latch, if the latch is still sticking or grinding.

Tips & Warnings

  • To open the hood on your Santa Fe, press the auxilliary hood release found on the front of your SUV. After releasing the latch, pull the hood up until the hydraulics take over the job of opening the hood.

  • Save time on your Hyundai Santa Fe maintenance by lubricating your door latches and hatch latch at the same time you lubricate the hood latch. Fortunately, the steps and supplies for lubricating all of these items are the same.

  • If you don't have lithium grease at home, you can pick up one at an auto store. Zenex Zenalube White Industrial Lithium Grease is a good product to use.
