How to Replace the Wheel Speed Sensor in a VW Jetta

The wheel speed sensor, which is an integral part of the anti-lock brake system on the VW Jetta, determines the speed of the wheels. To do this, it figures out the number of rotations the rotor makes around the axle. If the Jetta wheel speed sensor fails, the anti-lock brake system won't work accurately.

Things You'll Need:

Jack
Wrench or ratchet and socket set
Wire brush
Lubricant G 000 650
Jetta wheel speed sensor
Torque wrench, optional

Step 1

Determine whether you need to replace the front or rear wheel speed sensor.
Step 2

Place a jack under the car in the correct position and raise it. With the car supported, take off the tire and wheel assembly.
Step 3

Detach the Jetta wheel speed sensor wiring connector.
Step 4

Use a wrench or a ratchet and socket set to loosen and detach the wheel bearing housing bolt. To remove the rear wheel speed sensor, you need to remove the nut from the stub axle.
Step 5

Pull the wheel speed sensor out of the wheel bearing housing.
Step 6

Clean the area with a wire brush and lubricate it with lubricant G 000 650. You may want to cover the wheel bearing housing to prevent debris from entering the hole where the wheel speed sensor goes.
Step 7

Insert the new Jetta wheel speed sensor. Reinstall the components you removed. If you have a torque wrench, tighten the wheel bearing housing bolt to 70 inch pounds (8 Nm).

Tips & Warnings

Failure to install a wheel speed sensor properly, such as contact with moving parts or stretched sensor cables, can result in ABS failure that can threaten your safety. If in doubt, consult a mechanic for correct installation.
Never remove the speed sensor with pliers. If corrosion causes the sensor to seize to the differential housing, steering knuckle or rear bearing assembly, use a small mallet and to remove it by lightly tapping the edge of the sensor ear and rocking the sensor from side to side until it comes loose.
Never hammer or bang the new wheel speed sensor into the sensor housing. You must push it in by hand.
The disconnection of the negative battery cable may interfere with the on-board computer function, if equipped. Upon reconnection, the computer may need to go through a relearning process.
