How to Replace the Throttle in a Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima made its debut in 1982 and launched its historic seventh generation for 2009. During the onslaught of practical family sedans from Japanese automakers in the 1990s, the Maxima was a favorite of car enthusiasts. With a powerful V6, stylish, upscale interior and a sporty demeanor, it features solid name recognition and a loyal following. Today Maxima is a front-wheel drive mid-size family car with a 3.5L V6. Replacing the throttle is an intermediate do-it-yourself project.

Instructions

  1. Remove the Throttle Body

    • 1

Make sure the engine and all components are completely cool. Disconnect the battery ground. Then isolate it to avoid accidental contact with the terminal while installing the throttle.

    • 2

Relieve the pressure in the fuel system. Keep in mind that the pressure is maintained even when the vehicle is cold.

    • 3

Take the intake duct off the throttle body. Label the electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and their fittings. Then remove the connectors and the vacuum hoses from the throttle body. Disconnect the cables for the cruise control and the accelerator.

    • 4

Loosen the fasteners on the throttle body and remove them. Lift the throttle body off the manifold. Place a clean shop cloth over the opening to the manifold to prevent dirt from falling into the engine.

    Install the Throttle Body

    • 5

Clean any dirt, debris and old gasket matter from the throttle body mating surfaces. Take care not to damage the surfaces. Position a new gasket on the intake manifold.

    • 6

Set the new throttle body in place on the manifold. Tighten the fasteners.

    • 7

Install new clamps and reconnect the water hoses to the throttle body. Engage the electrical connectors and the vacuum hoses that were labeled earlier.

    • 8

Continue the installation, reconnecting and installing components in the reverse order of their removal. Reconnect the battery ground cable and tighten the bolt at the terminal.

    • 9

Refill the cooling system with the proper amount, type and mix of coolant. Start the engine and check for leaks. Make the necessary adjustments. Test the level of the coolant and add more as needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to drain coolant into a sealable container as its sweet smell attracts pets and ingestion can be fatal.

  • Place a clean shop cloth over the opening of the manifold to prevent debris from falling into the engine.
